Shamrock Hill overlooks the beautiful Freestone Valley, 22km east of the historic township of Warwick, Queensland. Our land comprised 80 acres of undulating ground with well timbered sites for natural shelter. The paddocks range from native grasses to improved pastures.
We are members of Dexter Cattle Australia Inc. (DCAI) and part of the recently formed Dexter Group of Darling Downs. We run black, red, long legged, short legged, horned and polled animal from a variety of interstate and international bloodlines.
Why breed Dexters?
We were initially attracted to the Dexter breed due to their naturally small stature, excellent temperament and dual purpose qualities. (Meat and Milk) This are a unique qualities that cannot be found in any other breed. Their small stature also reduces the impact of soil compaction due to their smaller size.
Dexter cattle adapt well to hot summers and cold winters and convert feed well by grazing on various grasses and browsing on different shrubs. Dexter have an excellent temperament which suits our young family and makes for easier handling.
Dexter for Meat.
Many commercial meat producers are not attracted to small breeds such as Dexter due to the processing costs. But boutique and home grown meat suppliers appeciate the exceptional qualities of the finished Dexter product.
GeneStar® testing on Australian Dexters records Marbling as low which is endorsed by the National Heart Foundation. Tenderness and Feed Efficiency levels are also high.
Dexter have a naturally excellent temperament. If not, they are culled. For that reason, we have cattle that are less likely to stress prior to processing which increases meat quality.
The meat is full of flavour, tender and juicy with moderate fat coverage. Without a doubt, the best meat we have ever had.
Dexter for Milk.
The average Dexter cow will produce around 7 litres per day with 3.93% butter fat and 3.54% protein. This is sufficient for a calf as well as the average home. Dexter milk is easily digested due to the smaller fat glob similar to goats milk but without the aftertaste.
